Sharon Johanssen, a nurse vacationing in Colorado, struggles to revive a tourist in the throes of death. Introducing himself as an unlicensed physician, a man comes to her aid. He performs an extraordinary life-saving proceedure then leaves the scene. In awe of the deed, Sharon finds him. He is Alex Vessali, a self-doubting, disgraced surgeon. After investigating his background, she wonders if he was framed. Together they embark on a danger-filled quest for the truth. They uncover a series of clues: an anonymous donation to a Manhattan hospital; a missing syringe; altered hospital records; a package containing three innocent-looking photographs; a piece of scrap paper with the words, "a water house."
